Sir Ed Davey, the leader of the Liberal Democrats, has recently taken a strong stance against US President Donald Trump. He labeled Trump as a "bully" and called on the UK to stand firm against him. During a speech at his party's spring conference in Harrogate, Sir Ed urged the Prime Minister to coordinate a unified response to US tariffs alongside the European Union and Canada.  

Trump has announced a series of new tariffs, set to take effect on April 2, which are taxes imposed on goods imported from other countries. The UK has already been impacted by a 25% tariff on all steel and aluminum imports. In response, Sir Ed suggested that the UK should "hit back with tariffs of our own," starting with taxes on imports of Tesla electric cars. Tesla is run by Elon Musk, who also serves as a senior adviser to Trump.

However, UK Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has so far resisted taking similar measures, opting instead for a "pragmatic approach" while keeping all options open. He criticized Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, for dismissing Sir Keir's plan for an international force to support a ceasefire in Ukraine as "a posture and a pose." Sir Ed countered, "Britain is leading in Europe again, as we have done at the greatest moments in our nation's history."

The Liberal Democrat leader urged the Prime Minister to intensify efforts to support Ukraine, suggesting that funding could come from freezing Russian assets in the UK.

Earlier, Chancellor Rachel Reeves stated on the BBC's *Sunday with Laura Kuenssberg* program, "We do not want to see British exporters subject to higher tariffs, and we want to see trade barriers fall across the world." She hinted that the UK might consider adjusting the Digital Services Tax, which affects global tech giants like Amazon and Meta, as part of a deal to avoid tariffs. However, Sir Ed criticized this approach, calling it "changing the UK's tax policy to appease Donald Trump and Elon Musk."
